The Choza solicits specific fellowships based on the needs and long-term projects of the Choza Membership.

Artist in Residence

Artist in Residence Fellowship is designed to provide a creative space to inspire dedicated work and promote interactions between artists, scientists and people from other disciplines. Artist in Residence Fellowship may be anywhere from 1 to 3 months in duration and in any creative or artistic field. Artists in Residence Fellows are required to complete a community project (e.g. art workshop or exhibition of their work) during their stay. Artists may make use of the Choza land and facilities and have the time and space to work independently during the day.

Application Process

If you are interested in becoming an Artist in Residence Fellow please send a summary of your project (artistic intentions) a short bio and a sample portfolio to fellowship@chozadelmundo.com in addition to completing the on-line application. Please also familiarize yourself with the Fellowship in Residence summary of the Fellowship Program.

Finances

Artists in Residence Fellowships are not typically sponsored residencies at the Choza. Board and use of the facilities is free however and food harvested from the farm may be used with exchange of a little manual labour. In some cases, the Choza Members can help fundraise for your proposed project. A summary of individual finances and support for materials should be detailed in the application. Where support fundraising is required, this should be noted.

Community Involvement

One requirement of the Artist in Residence Fellowship is community learning, teaching and involvement. The Choza is located in Concepcion, Costa Rica and is the fifth “family” in the town, 1km away from the school and football pitch. Choza Fellows learn a tremendous amount from knowledge, skills, and perspective from our community. Therefore, it is a requirement to be part of it. One third of the way through the Artist in Residence Fellowship, the Fellow must determine and architect a local project to teach, learn and collaborate (such as free exibits, workshops, teaching classes in local schools, etc.) with the Concepcion/Zapaton/Mastatal communities in an authentic and respectful manner.
